About this course

After many years of teaching in Switzerland, including three online courses during the pandemic years, Whitfield Reaves returns to Switzerland for a practical course, focusing on location, palpation, and needle techniques on the important points used for sports injury and pain.

This course is based upon the integration of Chinese acupuncture with anatomy, western orthopedics, and sports medicine. The weekend seminar will feature hands-on skills of location, palpation, and needle technique. Each participant will have the opportunity to practice with supervision the needling of common acupuncture points used to treat sports injuries and pain.

Each core unit of instruction on injury and pain syndromes will consist of:

  • Brief review of point location and clinical use

  • Demonstration by instructor

  • Supervised practice of point location and palpation

  • Supervised practice of needle techniques

Pain and injury syndromes in these regions are discussed:

Upper Extremity

  • The supraspinatous and infraspinatous

  • The AC joint and the glenohumeral joint

  • The rhomboid minor

  • The levator scapulae

Lower Extremity

  • The gluteus medius and the trochanteric bursae

  • The anterior and medial knee joint

  • The achilles tendon

  • The plantar fascia

  • The talar joint of the ankle

Objectives

  • Participants will know the anatomy involved in the four most common injury and pain syndromes in the upper and lower extremities.

  • Participants can perform palpation and the correct location of acupuncture points local and adjacent to the injury site.

  • Participants can locate, palpate, and needle 3 trigger points in the region.

  • Participants can locate, palpate, and needle 3 motor points in the region.

Preparatory Online Course

This on-site seminar also builds upon the three online-moduls (each 10h) by Whitfield Reaves taking place from August 2020 to February 2021 and delivers the practical aspects based on the material discussed online. Participants not familiar with Whitfield Reaves treatment style are encouraged to book and work through the two online modules for the upper and lower extremities.
